Apicella's Bakery History: Alphonse Cimino & Family
Al Cimino began his career at Apicella's Bakery at the age of 14. He worked there after class until he graduated high school. Al then took a job as bakery assisant supervisor at Hostess Case in New Haven and continued to work at Apicella's on the weekends. Hostell Cake then transferred him to Natick Massachusetts. After 5 years of being out of state, the owners of Apicella's Bakery contacted Al and offered him an opportunity to buy the bakery. He then along with his wife, Rose moved their three children Nancy, MaryBeth, and Pat back to Connecticut in 1976 and purchased the bakery with only 3 employees and 2 delivery vans. In 1980 Apicella's lease was up at their current location in a rear lot at 64 Houston Street New Haven, and Al was now forced to find a new location for his growing bakery. He contacted nearby Bartiromo's Bakery because he learned that their business was for sale and shortly thereafter purchased their building and business. See Photo. Bartiromo partner, Pat Bartiromo continued to work for Al through the transition and until his retirement.
Shortly after getting settled in to our new location, we realized that there was a need for us to have a “walk in “ retail outlet store to capitalize on the busy traffic on Grand Avenue. Even though customers could buy our products at local stores, some people still prefer the" Fresh out of the oven" experience of stopping at a bakery. We began an expansion/ remodel project in early 1984. Upon the completion we immediately attracted a steady, loyal customer flow. Now over thirty years later our customers still flock to the bakery bright and early for their morning “fresh bread", coffee, and service with a smile.
Today Apicella’s Bakery continues to be family owned and operated. We currently have 23 employees and 7 delivery vehicles, which allows us to distrubute the freshest quality Italian baked goods daily throughout greater New Haven County.
